Proposition 215, also known as the Compassionate Use Act of 1996, was passed in the state of California in the United States in 1996. According to it, the growing, possession, and use of marijuana or cannabis is allowed as long as people obtain a written or oral permission from their doctors. The note should state that the person needs marijuana or cannabis for medical reasons.

The Act aims to eliminate the use of marijuana for recreational purposes. It puts into consideration the medical benefits of marijuana, and it does not want to deprive the sick people from availing them.

The following are the steps on how to get a marijuana license card in California:

  • Get a written permission from your doctor. The letter should clearly state how you will benefit from the plant. It should include a detailed explanation of your condition. Today, some of the illnesses included in the medical marijuana program are arthritis, anorexia, AIDS, glaucoma, cancer, persistent muscle spasms, nausea, seizures, migraine, and other chronic disorders. A person who gets approved by the state health department will be able to use and also grow marijuana.
  • Send your application for a medical marijuana license card to California’s health department. Fill out an application form and submit it to the office, along with your doctor’s letter of recommendation, proof of your residency in California, identification card, and an application fee of $33-$66. The amount depends on where you live.
  • Once you receive your medical marijuana license card, you can now grow, use, and possess marijuana! Bear in mind that there is a limit as to how much marijuana an individual can use, possess, and cultivate at one given time. In California’s medical marijuana program, the maximum amount is eight ounces. There are, however, special circumstances where a person can ask to use, cultivate, or possess more than eight ounces of marijuana. You just have to really justify your situation and provide all the required documents in order to get approved.

Marijuana is a multi-faceted plant that human beings can benefit from. It has been proven to be useful in various types of medical treatments, and we are hoping that scientists will find more uses for it. Ongoing research and studies will hopefully bring about more positive attributes of marijuana and these things could someday change the minds of other people who think marijuana as an illicit drug that should be completely shunned.

The negative effects of marijuana only happen when people abuse it. Those that consumer marijuana in large doses are the ones that suffer from the adverse effects of the drug. If people just learn how to use it appropriately and moderately, more people will be able to avail of its benefits.
